Book: The Tommyknockers (Stephen King, 1987)

I think its' time to go on an indefinite Stephen King detox. Either that or I need to expand my horizons and try different authors. Either way, reading The Tommyknockers so soon after Full Dark, No Stars was a bad idea as both are fairly weak efforts.

My main issue with The Tommyknockers is that, much like Insomnia, it is overly written and goes into the realms of extreme self indulgence. Taking the long route to explain literally every event in the narrative, what could've been a breezy 400 page novel in the same vein as 'Salem's Lot, is needlessly padded out to over 900 pages which, in turn, makes for an excruciating read at times. Whilst well written, every chapter screams "get to the point", with one section focussing on the back story of a dead character for close to 70 pages. Reading is supposed to be enjoyable escapism, not an ordeal. Long winded drivel best describes this book, despite the obvious potential of the story.

In definite need of something less taxing with my next read. Either that or just something shorter.
