Book: Pirate Latitudes (Michael Crichton, 2009)
Considering the last few books I've read have been something of a slog, Pirate Latitudes was exactly what I needed. I have mentioned a couple of times on this blog that Michael Crichton, may he rest in peace, is a man of limited quality in terms of the way he writes but it's easy to overlook that fact when he spins yarns as furiously entertaining as this. It wont win any points for originality but it's pleasant to see him stray away from his techno thriller comfort zone to create an adventure story that, whilst blatantly ripping off Pirates of the Caribbean, is every bit as fun as the likes of Airframe or Jurassic Park.
Forget the likes of State of Fear, which was scuppered but its whiney and preachy message. Pirate Latitudes is Crichton at his best.
