Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979)
Like The Godfather and the original Toy Story, Alien, in my opinion, is the better film compared to it's equally lauded sequel. A tight, taut fright fest, it's brooding and really quite frightening. The premise is also so damn simple: space truckers awake from cryo-sleep to answer distress call on uncharted planet, inadvertently bring alien life form on board, alien kills the crew. The chest burster scene has now become legendary and still warrants tension some 31 years on and the film is one of the most cinematic of Ridley Scott's career (older brother to Unstoppable's Tony Scott). The last half hour, post Ash's major plot revelations, are unbearably tense with the climax literally a count-down to oblivion, after Ripley, in her last act of desperation, activates the ship's self destruct system. A perfect example of why the 70's was such a great era for film.
A classic.
