Austin Powers in Goldmember (Jay Roach, 2002)

The last time I saw Goldmember was in the cinema back in 2002. I was 17 then and being 25 now it seems that the humour has not aged too well. Gone is the witty parody of the spy movie genre and in it's place we have fart jokes and Mike Myers doing yet more characters with silly voices. Including Fat Bastard was a stretch (the character is deeply unfunny) but Goldmember as a new antagonist is just crap. The franchise had really lost it's way by this point (and was still repeating jokes from the first film) and considering Myers' last star effort outside the Shrek series was The Love Guru (*vomits*), it makes you wonder where it would have gone from here. Fortunately there was no fourth entry.

Michael Caine however, as Austin Powers' dad, is hilarious. The banter between him and Austin (the only character that Myers plays that still remains funny) is very funny indeed.

2.5/5
