Another fairly upmarket straight to video release this month after the boring Burning Bright, Splinter is actually an effectively gruesome and tense shocker about a trio of people trapped inside a petrol station as some nasty mutated beasty tries to get them. Making surprisingly good use of the limited space (and budget for that matter), the film is littered with genuine moments of tension and some truly nasty gore effects, point of fact: one man amputates his whole arm to avoid the splinter infection spreading.
It does feel a bit too like a straight to DVD movie despite its theatrical release in the States and feels somewhat episodic at times but Splinter is a fairly decent ride that kept me very much entertained.
I liked it as much as the flawed but fun Piranha 3D.
3/5
