Scream (Wes Craven, 1996)

I can quite comfortably say that Scream is, hands down, Wes Craven’s finest work. Whilst being a satire on the rules that dictate the slasher genre, it is also a genuinely frightening and often very funny film. As a satire it works, and a fright fest it works and as a throwback to the genre that made Craven famous, it doesn’t stop with its greatness. Fourteen years on and Scream is still remembered as one of the genres’ flagship film.

The opening still remains terrifying. I had the pleasure of watching the film in the company of those that had never seen it before and despite all of them complaining that Scary Movie somewhat sullied the experience for them, most were on edge during that phone call.

A horror masterpiece.

5/5
