Piranha 3D 9 Minute Clip Analysis

Quick thoughts. I don't normally feel teaser clips from movies warrant a post on this blog but having just witnessed the sheer audacity of the leaked footage of Piranha 3D, I felt obliged to say something.

Judging by what has been shown hear, as well as the director's promise that he's saved the best for the finished film, it is entirely possible that Piranha 3D will be the bloodiest movie of the last ten years. In the 9 minutes of teaser footage, we not only get mauled corpses (of which there are hundreds after the piranha's end up feasting on those partying Spring Break kids) but we have exploding heads (crushed between two speed boats), chicks getting sliced in two by snapping cables, one person literally falling apart whilst being carried to the safety of the beach, piranhas eating their way out of victim's mouths, and, in the two nastiest moments, a chewed up cock floating passed the camera and one young lady having her head skinned as he hair gets caught in a propeller blade. I expected nastiness from the team that gave us Mirrors and The Hills Have Eyes but seriously, I actually found myself shocked at the sheer bravura of the grue, each set piece death not only outdoing the other but also managing at times to be so out there that it's actually repulsive. And I'm a man who digs on screen gore.

To watch this I 3D will certainly be an experience. As a teaser of what to expect, I hope that the filmmakers haven't shot their load too soon. Rumours were already abound that this would be bloody but not only have they delivered, it surpassed what I thought was possible for what is a B-roll creature feature.

The film aint out till the end of August so I wait to see if all the carnage will gel successfully with the rest of the film but for those who dig extreme and creative violence it shows a lot of promise. What I've seen is shocking but that's somewhat encouraging these days when most horror movies have shown us all that can be seen in terms of gore. I rather hope I have a ball with this film.
