District 13: Ultimatum (Patrick Alessandrin, 2009)

The French only seem to be able to make one of three kinds of film: arty-farty pretentious twaddle, extreme horror and gore or films like this that feature minimal plot and mucho grandiose action.

The plot line for D13: Ultimatum is silly at best (corrupt government officials implement civil war in the cornered off D13 in order to get everyone out, level it and rebuild it into a new apartment complex that’ll bring millions to development contractors...erm, what?) but what it does well is extended excitement and inventive action sequences. Its MTV style practically screams Michael Bay and gets a bit grating but this is a film made by boys for boys and sometimes, especially after a heavy night out with a group of friends (as was my viewing experience) dumb and silly are precisely what you crave.

There is an element of childish glee in seeing the free-running action moments. Stupid but oh so fun.
