Film: Scre4m (Wes Craven, 2011)
There are two very clever moments in Scre4m. Unfortunately, they appear right at the start and right at the end. For the rest of the run time, the film gets so caught up with trying to be clever it ends up being too convoluted and dumb.
Unlike the first film, which stayed on the right side of clever whilst being a terrific example of the slasher genre, the rest of the franchise has slowly dwindled into self parody. Whilst Scre4m is a step up from it's immediate predecessor, it is still weak. It's too busy to have any real focus and with a murder literally every two minutes, none of the killings have any impact. Half the cast were also so woefully underwritten it begs the question as to why they were there in the first place.
If they had the balls to kill Sidney at the end and have the killer's plan come to fruition, the possibilities for a Scream 5 would be tantalising. Unfortunately, this doesn't happen, which means any further films will just be retreads of the same formula.
