CD: Billy Joel: The Ultimate Collection (Billy Joel, 2000)
A key artist in my upbringing, Billy Joel never fails to bring a smile to my face. One of many “best of” Joel compilations, it is endlessly packed with song after song of greatness. Not since Queen and their three greatest hits compilations has there been an album so full of classics.
Here we have the likes of:
Just the Way You Are, My Life, It’s Still Rock ‘n’ Roll To Me, Piano Man, Uptown Girl, Tell Her About It, Goodnight Saigon, Allentown, An Innocent Man, All for Leyna, I Go to Extremes, The Downeaster Alexa, You’re Only Human (Second Wind) and that’s only half of what is presented here.
I often have issues with “best of” works as they rarely feature what many fans would consider the artist’s best work (I’m looking and the Guns ‘n’ Roses Greatest Hits in particular) but it’s hard to fault the work here. Endlessly enjoyable, it hits me with waves of nostalgia every time I give it a listen.
Fans of Billy Joel should not be without it.
5/5
