Outpost (Steve Barker, 2008)

A Nazi zombie movie that's, surprise, surprise, really rather dull. That's not to say it's complete failure. There's some genuinely creepy moments whittled out of the minimalist camera work, allowing an element of foreboding in amongst the shadows. It's completely inoffensive, sticks rigidly to a formula and does no harm in terms of being flat out wrong with it's violence.

The low score, however, is due to how flat the experience is. Nazi zombies is a well worn concept and this film brings little new to the idea. It is also agonisingly slow, the first death popping up at the hour mark of its eighty minute run time with the downtime of the mission taking up most of the room. The deaths are lacking in invention and everyone spends their time being as serious as possible. It's a Nazi zombie movie for crying out loud. At least have some fun with it.

It is very well shot though. As a visualist, debut director Steve Barker is a talent to look out for. He needs to learn a thing or two about pacing though.

2/5
