Despite this being a lesser effort in Scorsese's cannon, I have no doubt that Shutter Island will make it into my list of the top ten of 2010 come year end. An above average b-movie schlock fest is elevated to more-entertaining-than-it-has-any-right-to-be thanks to the director's trademark flare and DiCaprio's tormented performance. The twist is obvious from about twenty minutes before hand but it's delivered in a convincing and straight fashion that never feels overly hokey.
I really did enjoy the hell out of this movie. It's probably the closest Scorsese has come to a full blown horror film.
4/5
