I need to watch genuinely frightening movies with my female buddies more often. Watching this leaner cut of the film to the first version I saw (the one shipped around to studios for the purposes of buying the pic), I spent most of my time revelling in the fear of my female compadres. One in particular spent the majority of her time hidden behind a pillow. And I thought that was a cliché.
A flawed yet deeply unsettling film, Paranormal Activity, along with Rec, are the most frightening films to come out of the last decade. Doors creaking, loud banging and ominous shadows on doors make for shit in you pants moments. The film benefits from a slow build the relentlessly throwing scare after scare at you. The daytime scenes lag in places but that’s not to detract from the fact that what is presented is a truly excellent modern ghost story.
This cut, the cinema version, is much better.
4.5/5
