I remember reading about the then upcoming Trick ‘r Treat way back in 2006. Horror websites like Bloody Disgusting and Shock-till-you-drop were positively creaming themselves over the film. I can’t blame them: I have a soft spot for anthology horror. I dug the hell out of Creepshow (and also enjoyed its sequel) and Tales From the Darkside was a bit of campy fun that featured a cat killing a trained assassin by crawling down his throat. I find they go all the way back to campfire stories, the cautionary tales my friends and I used to tell each other during sleepovers.
However, for reasons that are still unknown, Warner Bros pulled the film from its scheduled October 2007 release date only to be dumped unceremoniously straight to DVD two years later. The decision, on the back of the final product, is somewhat baffling as Trick ‘r Treat is not only a huge amount of fun but is also a genuinely good movie. Whilst it aint out-and-out terrifying, it conjures up enough creepy imagery to give you the willies.
Telling four separate intertwining Halloween themed stories, the film plods along at a reasonable pace. The stories vary enough to keep the viewer interested (the best being the School Bus Revisited and the ending one with Brian Cox) and come the end, despite it’s rickety first fifteen minutes, you feel as though a thoroughly enjoyable ride has been had.
It has Dylan Baker in it. Any movie with Dylan Baker in it should be seen by everyone.
4/5
