Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg, 1998)

“Keep the sand out of your weapons. Keep those actions clear. I'll see you on the beach.” – Captain John Miller

And with those words, Spielberg thrusts the audience into the single most visceral depiction of war ever committed to film. It’s harsh, brutal and has become the norm for battle scenes ever since.

Who’d have thought that twelve years on, this three hour man-on-a-mission movie sandwiched between two twenty minute battle sequences would still hold it’s own? With this and Schindler’s List, Spielberg has fashioned the two best examples of the war genre and in the time that’s passed, hasn’t made a movie anywhere near as good, with the possible exception of Munich.

I still find Wade’s death difficult to watch. To see a man blubbering for his mother as he dies is particularly upsetting.
