Considering my internet connection is playing silly buggers, you can’t buy Never Sleep Again in Britain and it’s comes in at just under four hours in length, this review is based on the first three hours, up until Wes Craven has pitched his idea of New Nightmare to New Line Cinema.
Think of all the bog standard twenty minute “making of” features on any big DVD release and you kind of have Never Sleep Again in a nutshell. The only thing is, there’s nothing bog standard about it. Giving every movie in the series and extensive look, the insight into the series is a whole is nothing short of remarkable, with only the truly famous faces not present (so no Johnny Depp or Patricia Arquette and, oddly, not even a mention of Lawrence Fishburn). Every director is accounted for with most (especially Renny Harlin) saying rather disparaging things about New Line head Robert Shaye and every film is given equal treatment. There’s a long segment on the gay subtext in No 2 as well as including short moments that mention the advertising boom of Freddy Kruger and the ill fated Freddy’s Nightmares TV series.
Upon taking a break for dinner I realised that I had been watching for over two and a half hours yet, for a film that is essentially and epic “making of” blurb, it was one of the fastest two and half hours I’ve spent watching anything.
A must watch for any fan of the series. The only reason it misses out on a perfect score is due to it being a glamorised DVD extra.
4.5/5
