The Hangover (Todd Phillips, 2009)

Remembering much of the Hangover was surprisingly easy considering how drunk I was. Maybe it’s a testament to how good the film is or maybe I wasn’t quite as bevied as I thought, I dunno, but for that majority of its run time, I laughed. Hard.

For the most part I find frat boy style humour grating but somehow the filmmakers pull it off here. Effectively Dude Where’s My Groom? the shenanigans that befall these goons is gut bustingly funny at times. A somewhat racial skit involving a Chinese gangster and his missing $80,000 is the high point but even during the brief downtime the film has a charm that leaves you with a big stinking grin on your face.

Again, a sequel is in pre-production. Movie lightning like this, generally, does not strike twice.

4/5
