Guy Ritchie’s sixth film is a step in the right direction in terms of maturity. There are no cockney geezers with stupid names like Johnny the Hatchet or Big Floppy Donkey Dick, no convoluted story strands that struggle to tie into one another, what we’ve been given is a flawed yet contained story with a lot of charisma and little pretention.
The spark between its two leads hold the film together yet, for all his charm, I often found it difficult to follow Downey Jr’s dialogue through his mumbled words and staccato delivery. The female characters seem horribly underdeveloped, as if they were a last minute add on to assure the American audience that these two bickering men are not, you know, gay for each other or something.
It is, however, completely forgettable. It breezes along without much purpose and, as such, it leaves very little impact like a glossy empty shell. It is a movie that aims for mediocrity and succeeds admirably. It hits all the right entertainment buttons and little else.
I found Jude Law less irritating than normal.
3/5
