Hatchet (Adam Green, 2006)

Adam Green’s debut is poorly directed, written and acted, is riddled with many aesthetic problems and successfully manages to travel from Point A to Point A in a lazy and cack-handed manner, however, it has a rye wit that makes it genuinely funny at times (the token blonde air-head asks “are your sure the number’s 911?” when phoning for help) and between heads being ripped in half/twisted off and faces being shredded on sanding belts, the gore is gloriously over the top and inventive.

Victor Crowley (played by Friday the 13th regular Kane Hodder) is no Freddy Kruger or Jason Voorhees and the ending is flat with no real punch-line but this is a movie that wilfully forgets to take itself seriously. As an amateur-ish throwback to 80’s slasher, it does exactly what it set out to do.

It’s not very good but at least it’s better than the Friday the 13th remake.

2.5/5
