Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room (Alex Gibney, 2005)

Whilst it is very difficult to be completely objective in documentary filmmaking, it’s hard to dispute the facts presented in Alex Gibney’s devastating case study of corporate greed and its repercussions. Detailing the largest corporate scandal in history, Gibney manages to make the world of financial fraud and meltdown utterly riveting, Enron’s key players akin to characters found in the pages of a John Grisham paperback.

Whilst Gibney “did a Michael Moore” with his next project, the excellent Taxi to the Darkside, it’s refreshing to see a documentary far less politically motivated than many recent efforts. How it lost the Oscar to that Morgan Freeman film with the retarded penguins is anyone’s guess.
