Once upon a time Paul W.S. Anderson (not to be confused EVER with Paul Thomas Anderson of Magnolia fame) made a flawed yet effective little chiller called Event Horizon. Since then he has decided to piss his career away making shit like this.
I really don’t understand why filmmakers these days insist on deviating so much from the source material when it comes to computer game adaptations. You change too much, you’re gonna piss off your target audience (the fans) and you ultimately start to wonder what the point in making it was in the first place. How Doom could’ve been better had they just opened that doorway to hell. Not that there’s actually been a decent movie based on a computer game mind…
Resident Evil is garbage, bogged down by acting that’s bad by normal bad acting standards and a formulaic and redundant screenplay where characters insist on telling you everything about what’s happening, who they are and what their motivations are whenever they have the chance. It lacks tension, isn’t scary (an understatement) and seems to insist on having god awful industrial metal music cues whenever even the smallest amount of action starts, say for instants, when someone moves their head. Astonishingly, the sequel (Apocalypse) managed to be much worse.
I’ve done farts that were more entertaining than this.
1.5/5 (it gets half a point for the cameo from Milla Jovovich’s vagina at the end)
