Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

Ok, so this isn't a movie review, but at times during the course of Modern Warfare 2 you're so engrossed in the narrative it may as well be. Controversy aside, Modern Warfare 2 is possibly the most intense gaming experience in recent years. It's engaging, unbelievably relentless and an instant classic of the interactive medium.

It's almost a shame that it's "No Russian" mission (in which you infiltrate a terrorist cell who enact a massacre against innocents at a Moscow airport) will be the main talking point for most. Whilst I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disturbed by the content, I applaud Infinity Ward for its inclusion as it really does bring the reality of "modern warfare" into stark contrast, bringing the very nature of morality into question. Does committing such a heinous act really benefit the greater good? Unsurprisingly, The Daily Mail have attempted to cause a moral shit storm, failing to realise the game is actually treating its adult audience like adults.

That aside, quite frankly, it’s awesome! Whilst the plot line is utter lunacy (essentially it’s a Russia invades America story) and you seriously have to suspend belief sometimes, it's an unrelentingly immersive experience. Whether you're retaking the White House or witnessing a nuclear explosion from space or guiding a predator missile into a large crowd of enemy soldiers or using the cover of a snow storm to sneak up on your enemies, the action is present and ferocious throughout. War really hasn't been conveyed in such an immediate manor, even by normal Call of Duty standards and at times you genuinely feel as though you’ve stepped into the middle of a Hollywood blockbuster.

This game alone is worth buying a console for.

5/5
