Game: God of War: Ghost of Sparta (Ready at Dawn, 2010)

I can't speak much for the continuity when comparing this entry to the rest of the established cannon, but Ghost of Sparta manages to retain its epic scale of the main trilogy, an awe inspiring feat considering the limitations of the PSP, yet the narrative still manages to feature locales such as the burning core of a volcano, the sunken city of Atlantis as well as Sparta itself. The gameplay is fluid, allowing enormously powerful moves to be executed with minimal difficulty whilst through an array of challenging enemies and boss fights your way. It's easy for hack-n-slash action games to become repetitive but somehow Ghost of Sparta is never dull. Despite there being no deviation to its linear gameplay, the pace is varied enough to be both emotionally gratifying as well as exciting.

Being that I've never been a huge Playstation fan, it seems odd then to own a PSP, yet despite the hand-held consol having a plethora of mediocre titles, its two God of War entries are really quite remarkable. Whilst the first entry, Chains of Olympus, was terrific, Ghost of Sparta is a near masterpiece and is worth the price of a PSP alone.

Simply excellent. Remarkable even.

5/5
