Film: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Rob Marshall, 2011)

Surely, some 4 years down the line from the lacklustre At World’s End, is enough time to raise the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise from the state of mediocrity that plagues its later entries. Unfortunately On Stranger Tides is exactly that: mediocre, ok, run of the mill. It’s perfectly fine whilst in the cinema but leaves next to no impact other than a disappointing sense of lethargy.

Despite the convolutions of the latter entries, there was at least a scale that was impressive on the big screen. On Stranger Tides is so subdued at times that you often wonder why the film cost so much, the only set piece of note being the rather excellent and threatening mermaid attack.

It’s a shame though to see a series that started with so much potential fall into the trappings of the Hollywood franchise machine. There seems no want to tell a genuinely enthralling story anymore, just the want to put out a half-baked entry to a franchise guaranteed to reap the money in. The stars appear to be having fun. Unfortunately most of the audience don’t feel the same way.

2.5/5
