Film: Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace (Martin Campbell, 2006/Marc Forster, 2008)

The Daniel Craig Bond films, whilst enjoyable, don't feel like true Bond pictures. The prospect of a more edgy tone to the sly, charismatic spy was appealing at the time, but I miss cheeky moments, like the gadgets and the villains hell bent on world domination or even the secret underground lairs.

That's not to be too critical on Craig's Bond. His performance is still terrific, with Bond now turning into a legitimately threatening super-spy as opposed to a trigger happy nymphomaniac.

Both films also have their strengths and weaknesses. Casino Royale if definitely the stronger of the two but is maybe a tad too long, where as Quantum of Solace is sleeker but more muddled. They work well together though as they're the first in the long running series to be direct continuations of one another, with Solace literally starting mere minutes after Royale. They share a continuity that warrants back-to-back viewing and, if seen this way, Solace works much better. Think of them as two halves of one story, in the same way as Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2.

I had gotten bored with James Bond but I am rather intrigued to see where they take the character with Bond 23. Rebooting the franchise completely may be the best thing that's ever happened to the super-spy.

Casino Royale: 4/5
Quantum of Solace: 3.5/5
