Book: Misery (Stephen King, 1987)

I read Misery in just two days, due in part to its short length but also due to being riveted. Focussing almost exclusively on the injured author, Paul Sheldon, and his psychotic fan, Annie Wilks, it is a tight, taught thriller that exemplifies King's ability to wring fear out of the simplest of premises.

With Wilks, he's created one of the most frightening antagonists of any of his work. The woman inspires both hatred and sympathy in equal measure.

4.5/5
