Book: A Dark Matter (Peter Straub, 2010)
This isn’t so much a review of A Dark Matter but more of an opinion piece of the work of Peter Straub. This is due to two things. Firstly, I haven’t read enough of A Dark Matter to be able to give a thorough review and secondly, this is the second of two of his works that I’ve put down due to boredom, the first being his most famous work, Ghost Story. Despite the glowing praise of the horror community (most notably, Stephen King), Peter Straub is an author who is so obsessed with making his prose sound as clever as possible that he forgets the one vital ingredient to good story telling: pacing.
Both Ghost Story and A Dark Matter are books the ooze promise but do nothing more than meander around the bigger picture in a flowery and redundant fashion. I feel almost robbed: A Dark Matter was one of those impulse buys that seemed like a great idea at the time. Unfortunately it’s one of the most tedious novels I’ve read since the woefully inept debut from Christopher Ransom, The Birthing House.
Though I like Stephen King’s novels, I will now stay clear of his recommendations.
