Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (Gore Verbinski, 2003)
Before it was bogged down by over-long, self indulgent sequels (that, I must admit, I still have a soft spot for), the original Pirates of the Caribbean was, and still is, a great big fun summer blockbuster that is not only competent but is consistently cinematic. It nails it's comic yet brooding tone and packs its run time with well choreographed action beats that still seem necessary in the film's context (unlike the tribal chase in part 2, which could be completely excised without detriment to the narrative).
Pacey and hugely enjoyable swashbuckling fun. This film reminds audiences that Jack Sparrow really did used to be funny.
