Man on Fire (Tony Scott, 2004)

The last Tony Scott movie to be any good and the first in which he goes totally and completely mental in the editing room. I would love to know how he goes about the editing process. Inject your editor with liquid caffeine, hand him a film feel and a pair of gardening sheers and you’d probably get a similar result.

Man on Fire though is a terrific movie. A tour de force as they say. Whilst taking a little too long to get going (the first 45 mins scream “cut to the chase”), Denzel Washington’s performance is remains electric. It’s bombastic, elastic and ADD spastic but I found myself reeling with tension for the duration, and I have seen this movie many times.

The climax brings the required emotional resonance to the proceeding carnage. It makes my bottom lip quiver every time.

4/5
