Zombieland (Ruben Fleischer, 2009)

Let’s get one thing straight; Zombieland is NOT the American Shaun of the Dead. Both feature zombies and both are rather funny but that is where the similarities end. The other thing is, is that Zombieland, despite it’s charm, it’s laughs and it’s awesome Bill Murray cameo, just isn’t as good as Shaun.

I did laugh though, quite a lot. The opening montage of carnage manages to do what the Dawn of the Dead remake did and show the zombie apocalypse as a rather frightening thing whilst, in the same instant, making it funny in a splat-stick kind of way. It’s quirky (the rules of survival keep popping up on screen whenever they’re instigated) and every member of the cast is extremely likeable.

Why don’t I rate it as highly as most then? Well, at just over 80 minutes, it seems just a little too breezy and fails to elevate itself above the merely enjoyable. Whilst I laughed, I was never howling (apart from the Murray cameo) and when our protagonist meets the sister team of Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin it slows right down.

It’s odd to find a comedy that let me down on the strength of its breeziness but if you’re a zombie fan and you like some bloody laughs, it wont hurt to watch it. It seems everyone enjoyed it more than I did anyway.

Still, see it for the Murray moment. It’s tres funny,

3.5/5
