Following (Christopher Nolan, 1998)

Following is a film that has a great premise and a brilliant screenplay but is scuppered by the talents of its actors. Had the Young Man and Cobb been portrayed by professional actors and not friends of the director, the film would’ve been mesmerising. As it stands, the obvious limitations of the cast hinder the movie to make it, quite comfortably Christopher Nolan’s worst film.

But it’s a bit harsh to criticise an otherwise excellent low budget crime caper on the back of its performances. Considering the gorilla style of filmmaking here (miles away from the slickness of The Prestige and The Dark Knight) the cast do their best. The script, however, is assured and smart, a consistent trademark in Nolan’s work and whilst his players don’t give the required gravitas to pull it off a lot of the time, the dialogue is snappy and the discombobulated time scale of the narrative is at times confusing but reaps satisfying rewards.

Any Nolan fan will dig it. Now I have Memento, Batman Begins and The Prestige to watch before the release of Inception.
