This is probably Ron Howard’s best film. Between this and Frost/Nixon, his career has been peppered with questionable Dan Brown adaptations and generic Oscar baiting, which whilst generally being good, are almost always forgettable (Cinderella Man anyone?). But it seems the story of the fated Apollo mission was custom made for Howard and his team. He has always been somewhat uncredited as a director of tension but throughout his filmography, he has proven this with gusto (look at Ransom), and whilst Apollo 13 has much of this, it is also a story that easily panders toward Howard’s leanings to the emotional and never at any point does it feel forced. So genuine is it, in fact, that every time I watch this (and I’ve seen it many, many times) it still makes me well up.
This is the film in his back catalogue that’s the most deserving of its Best Picture nomination. Don’t even get me started on A Beautiful Mind.
5/5
