Showgirls (Paul Verhoven, 1995)

I felt that watching Showgirls wouldn’t seem too out of place considering this month’s back catalogue of Saw sequels and trashy z-grade horror.

Subversive satire or one of the worst films ever made, however you look at it, those behind the trash-travesty that is Showgirls must have been laughing. Joe Eszterhas, the highest earning screenwriter at the time, gives us “classic” lines, such as: “You have nice tits! What do you think?” “I like having nice tits” and “does it feel odd not have people come all over you?” The man was paid millions for his work. It has to be one massive “fuck you” to the studio.

Who am I kidding; it’s dire right from the start. When director Paul Verhoven is good, he can be really good (Starship Troopers, Total Recall) but if Basic Instinct, his previous effort, should have taught him anything it’s that anything remotely approaching mainstream erotica is generally terrible. Showgirls certainly is.

There is a certain element of hilarity during the preposterous and laughably bad sex scene. Just watch Kyle MacLauchlan’s face. Priceless.
