Planet Terror should rank up with the likes of Braindead, the Saw series and Rodriguez's own From Dusk Till Dawn as one of the most gruesome movies ever made. Featuring graphic testical removal, brains being smashed out of skulls and eaten, skin being peeled back from a dude's ribcage to get to the goo inside, too many acts of dismemberment to even count and Tarantino's melting penis, the barrage of nastiness is relentless throughout. When people are shot they literally explode and the aforementioned testical slicing happens only ten minutes in.
The better half of the Grindhouse experiment (I have seen Tarantino's Death Proof twice and disliked it even more the second time), Planet Terror manages to keep things pacey and stick rigidly to the cheesy exploitation aesthetic. The on screen grue, like Braindead, is played primarily for sick laughs than to genuinely shock and offend and, despite having officially reached my mid twenties, I found many of the gags disgustingly amusing. I giggled for much of it's runtime. Geeky and self referential cameos from Tom Savini and Michael Biehn also help.
A full movie of the Machette preview will be out later this year. I'm oddly excited.
