The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik, 2007)

Brilliant to the last second. I just kinda wish I’d seen it sooner.

Not much to say here other than this is the first film I’ve seen since Let The Right One In (which I saw about this time last year) where everything just comes together flawlessly. Every actor is superb with special mention to the three principals: Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell. Affleck plays the needy Robert Ford as such with a desperate want to prove his worth due mainly to the somewhat unnecessary distain directed at him from pretty much everybody. Pitt as Jesse is terrifying. The actor has a chilling ability to make Jesse likable but ultimately frightening as his paranoia gets the better of him. His distrust, even to Robert and Charley Ford, his closest compadres, makes him constantly dangerous.

This is a film just shy of being as good as There Will Be Blood, released the same year. It just goes to show how good that one is (and believe me TWBB is a masterpiece) that Roger Deakins missed out on best cinematography. Jesse James is one of the best looking movies ever made.

5/5
