Film: The Mist (Frank Darabont, 2007)

Make no mistake about it, The Mist is one gruelling film. There are moments that could be construed as hokey (flying lizards, tentacles, etc) but what Darabont has delivered is the best Stephen King adaptation in years.

Yes the beasties are nasty but the real horror stems from Marcia Gay Harden's Mrs Carmody, a religious zealot who exploits the survivor's fear of the mist for her own personal gain. The depiction of mob mentality is more frightening than any of the monsters our characters encounter.

And THAT ending. It deserves to go down as one of the bleakest in history.
