Film: Cowboys and Aliens (John Favreau, 2011)

When seeing a film called Cowboys and Aliens, the viewer should be aware that they're not going to be watching fine art. There's cowboys, there's aliens, they're going to meet for some kind of confrontation and the reasons are going to be silly. So I went into it expecting some enjoyable trash in the same vein, say, Freddy vs. Jason.

The problem is it's not fun. Not fun at all. In fact, unlike Favreau's previous Iron Man films, there's no light hearted tone here, no wink at the camera and, most crucially, no charm. The straightness in which the principals play the material is totally at odds with just how ridiculous the idea of cowboys and aliens meeting actually is. Instead all, especially Daniel Craig, roll along with gruff faces trying desperately to add credibility. Ford is good though and just about the only watchable thing in this dull and inane exercise.

It doesn't work. The result is one of the most boring blockbusters of the summer.
