Game: Homefront (Kaos, 2011)

It doesn't surprise to fund the name John Milieus on the box art for Homefront, the game is almost a remake of Red Dawn with the Russians substituted for Koreans. The difference here though is that Homefront is quite unrelenting in its anarchy, the violence peppered with legitimately harrowing moments that at times make you question the 15 rating.

There are a number of flaws with Homefront, not least in its blink and you'll miss it campaign, which is desperately short, yet despite being brief, it's hard not to get drawn in with the bitter fight for freedom. The game makes a very early attempt for the player to hate the Korean hordes and while it seems obvious that this will garner some controversy (unsurprisingly it's banned in both North and South Korea), there is an unapologetic satisfaction in dispatching enemy soldiers as venomous as these.

Despite its shortcomings, Homefront is a perfectly fine FPS. Not quite on par with the juggernaughts of the genre but a relentless pace and often shocking narrative ensure that it makes its mark, even at it's short length.

4/5
