Or when the Terminator franchise went MTV.
In all fairness, Terminator Salvation isn’t as terrible as its reputation would have you believe, despite the fact that when it’s bad (which it frequently is) it’s really bad. Christian Bale is terrible, playing John Connor with his really irritating Batman voice. The dialogue and character motivations are hockey and generic, and the whole film just feels as though it’s treading ground, plodding along without the intelligence or the emotional depth of the Cameron entries.
It aint all cack though. Sam Worthington practically saves the film as Marcus Wright, a character that may not be as interesting as the filmmakers would hope, but Worthington’s performance elevates it above bog standard. And despite McG’s MTV sensibilities (seriously, stop calling yourself McG, idiot), the action scenes are admittedly well done and exciting.
But seriously, the Terminator franchise was done at the end of part 2. With each subsequent movie (T3 included), the series’ purpose diminishes. On it’s own merits though, Terminator Salvation is as good as Terminator 3.
3/5
