Bad Lieutenant: The Port of Call New Orleans (Werner Herzog, 2010)

Cage worries about getting his Swiss cotton underpants wet. Cage snorts coke. Cage gets prescription pain pills. Cage snorts coke. Cage shouts at pharmacist for not getting his prescription quick enough. Cake snorts coke. Cage smokes crack. Cage gets a hand job from young lady that gave him said crack. Cage makes a guy watch. Cage snorts heroine. Cage snorts coke to counter the effects of the heroine.

This is all within the first fifteen minutes.

I wouldn’t go so far as Empire magazine’s five star review but Bad Lieutenant is a very good film. Consistently mental (there are iguanas everywhere and one shot is shown from the perspective of a crocodile) there is nothing overly complex here. Just Cage being balmy whilst solving crime. Cage is excellent. When in the hands of a decent director like Herzog, he’s able to channel his off beat somewhat OTT acting style into something that is pure dynamite. This is a role perfectly suited to him. There’s also something inherently funny about Cage shouting “fuck” lots (and the “Fuck” word is probably said close to 10,000 times).

It’s good. Nothing earth shattering but a very well made, off beat crime drama that revels in all things excess.

4/5
