Sunshine (Danny Boyle, 2007)

Despite becoming a stalk-and-slash film come the final third, Sunshine is a terrific film that always remains thrilling when focussing on the sheer enormity of the central mission, something it still manages to retain during said stalk-and-slash moments.

Garland and Boyle need to do more work together. Despite working rigidly within genre cinema, both this and 28 Days Later remain two of the best examples of both science fiction and horror (respectively) during the last decade.

For the most part, once our heroes discover the previous Icarus ship, Sunshine rides along on knuckle chewing tension that rarely abates, whilst tackling the moralistic dilemmas in dealing with a mission that is too huge for basic comprehension as such, with one crew member quickly being placed under suicide watch after one minor calculation almost leads to disaster.

It's not perfect but Boyle really is a director that can tackle any material handed to him. That said, I am still yet to see Slumdog Millionaire.
