State of Play (Kevin Macdonald, 2009)

I really am a sucker for this kind of film. Whilst State of Play won’t score any points for originality, this is a cracking little thriller that is consistently enthralling and is only let down by the assumption that the audience is meant to believe that Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe are best buds. It’s all been seen before and often better (All the President’s Men for example, a film my girlfriend is eager to watch) but there’s no denying the satisfaction one feels after the complex web of lies and conspiracy are finally unravelled.

Still, I think I would’ve enjoyed it more had Brad Pitt and Ed Norton hadn’t jumped ship. A post Fight Club reunion is overdue.
