Ransom (Ron Howard, 1996)

Ron Howard’s only 18-rated movie to date is a cracking little thriller that seems to have fallen unfairly off the radar. Despite following generic genre conventions, the level of tension is matched only by the extreme amount of testosterone oozing from its male stars, point of fact: Mel Gibson and Gary Sinise can’t seem to communicate without shouting very loudly at each other.

Beyond Howard’s questionable Dan Brown adaptations it’s refreshing to know that not only can he do this kind of movie but he can do it well and after all his recent Oscar baiting tripe (I’m still sore that A Beautiful Mind beat Fellowship of the Ring) it’s nice to remember that Howard hasn’t always been a one trick pony.

The cast all do well. A pre-mental Mel Gibson is on particularly fine form.

4/5
