Toy Story 2 (John Lasseter, 1999)

Bare with me here as I really do think Toy Story 2 is a masterpiece of animation and is arguably one of the best in Pixar's back catalogue but I have problems with it. I really dislike Jesse, her character is insufferably irritating when she's on screen (probably due to the fact that Joan Cusack has a horribly irritating voice) and I also have issues with the musical number at the end. It's unnecessary and cheesy and is the sort of thing you'd associate with crass like Shrek (for those that don't know, I think the Shrek movies are massively overrated).

The only reason these are minor quibbles is because of just how great the rest of the film is. Like all great sequels it takes the established world of the original and expands, without forgetting what made the first one great. Jesse aside, the "Woody's Round-Up" gang add the interesting element of Woody's unknown heritage and Emperor Zurg as well as a second Buzz Lightyear are both gut-bustingly funny.

Whilst I prefer Toy Story (in the same way as I prefer Alien and the original Godfather) I really have no problem with people preferring this one. It manages to do everything right (apart from my aforementioned grievances) and you can't ask more than that.

The last great animated film of the 20th Century

5/5
