Unlike the works of Robert Altman or even P.T. Anderson’s Magnolia, there is much of Richard Curtis’s sprawling romance that can be omitted without detriment to the main plot. Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Laura Linney and Colin Firth add needless character arcs on a story that would have worked better had it just focused on the core trio of Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman. As a consequence it’s baggy and plods along with little direction.
Had there been some economy here or had Curtis at least created more purpose for the baggy scenes it may have worked better. As it stands it’s all a bit messy.
Bill Nighy as aging rocker Billy Mack is hilarious though. The stuff with that dude from the BT adverts travelling to America is quite funny too.
