Up (Pete Docter, 2009)

Pixar really are the studio how can do no wrong. In the fourteen years since Toy Story they have consistently proved that they are light-years ahead of their nearest rivals (DreamWorks, Bluesky, etc…) in terms of quality and the basic need to put story before anything else. Even their most lacklustre films, being Cars and A Bugs Life, only succeed in being so due to the fact that they are merely very good as opposed to reaching instant classic status.

Reviews for Up have been mostly positive and I truly believe that this is an understated masterpiece. Whilst I don’t think it reaches the heights of, say, Wall.e or the Toy Stories it does feature some of the best moments of Pixar’s excellent career. I’m not overly convinced the 3D added anything but it didn’t detract from the fact that his is clearly one of the best films of the year and by far the best animated feature. If the opening ten minutes don’t cause you to well up you’re a much stronger person than I.

The talking dogs are great. They had me howling with laughter.

5/5
