Cloverfield (Matt Reeves, 2008)

They should’ve killed Beth. It’s not that I find her annoying but had they had the balls to kill her I would’ve admired the filmmakers a lot more.

That said, 2008 was a great year for the “Found Footage” sub-genre of horror. Both this and Spanish zombie fest [rec] utilise the hand held technique (made famous by The Blair Witch Project) better than any other films I’ve seen and create such a tense level of immediacy that thrusts you directly into the nightmare. Once the monster rocks up its one relentless son of a bitch.

Like this years District 9, Cloverfield manages to outshine its £200million + blockbuster rivals with aplomb on a budget a tenth of the size. Just goes to show that limited funds really can make you more creative.

Brilliant.

  1. I read this literally five minutes after finishing my Paranormal Actvity review.

Cloverfield is ok. Nothing more. It's fine. Blair Witch, PA and Rec are all vastly superior.
